Cyberspace is Where We Are Now!

Cyberdosh is what we earn while we're here.

No matter what anyone tells us or thinks otherwise, cyberspace is real only in as far as real people can see what other real people are doing, hear what others are saying or gain from it in some way, shape or form. It's a numbers game, but it's becoming one that almost anyone can play and where nothing may be as it seems - what next?

Online, the space in which we exist is virtual, it has no substance other than the string of code that holds everything together and pushes it 'out there' into wherever 'there' might be. Without a reliable telecommunications network coupled to an equally reliable power supply, we cyberspace people cease to exist. It's a two-way street that relies on some greater power allowing us access into that street in the first place.

I see many references to virtual this, virtual that and virtual the next thing, millions of people jostling to be seen or heard in a sea of faceless names, titles, corporate brands and the glorious social media networks, most of which are simply yet another way of one entity trying to gain access to another entity's money.

So how, exactly, is the Internet driving society forward?

How can we harness its power to secure our own financial futures and well-being?

Without clout, we are nothing but microscopic specks of dust. Once again, money talks. In order to cut through the haze and focus our attention on something more specific, we need to do at least one of three things:

Know for what we seek
Know for whom we seek
Know why we seek in the first place

Without the answers to any of the above, we're as good as lost in cyberspace, so let's take a look at the possible reasons for being here.

The virtual audience is larger
The virtual customer base is larger

The list is endless, but let's focus on why you may be reading this particular page. You are here in the hope of finding something of financial benefit to either you or those you represent.

Sorry to disappoint you, but there's no free lunch here, only the ramblings of a dust speck who is trying to unite with other dust specks who seek similar goals. Life costs money, we all need it in order to survive. Most times, no matter how much we have, we still want more.

Cyberdosh began as a site where people could get something for nothing. It was a game, one where it cost nothing to search but there was always cash to be found. That was then, this is now... times have certainly changed and I'd like to know by just how much.

What is your time worth?

Many are slaving for wages of £6.03 per hour (UK national minimum wage) for a general 37.5 hours each week, many more work for less!

Shouldn't it then follow that a website, which may cost very little to set up and which can function automatically, need only generate an individual an average of £1.36 per hour from a global market in order to beat the UK's minimum wage?

And to top that, there are no costs for commuting, purchase of suitable workwear, coffee from a machine, lunches from a canteen or the odd fiver dropped into a kitty for whatever reason.

It isn't the cost of living that we should be scrutinising, it is the cost of earning.

HEROES RETURN 2 LOTTERY FUNDING ENDS JANUARY 2012

World War II veterans, their wives, husbands, widows or widowers and, in some cases, accompanying carers are eligible to apply for lottery funding that enables them to visit the countries where they or their loved ones once served. Funds of between £150 and £5,500 are available, depending on the number of people taking part and the destination.

Sgt. E. B. (Ted) Cachart W/OP RAF Bomber Command and former prisoner of war has already benefited from this funding. With his successful application, he was able to revisit the wartime bases of Avignon and Nice, allowing him to pay his final respects in remembrance of his fallen colleagues.

There are still many people who are unaware of this programme. It is not just ex-Army, Air Force and Navy personnel who can apply; Merchant Navy, Auxiliary Territorial Service, Navy Wrens and, in some cases, members of the Womens Auxiliary Air Force may also be eligible.

The 'Heroes Return 2' programme was first launched by The Big Lottery Fund in 2004 and has already provided over 50,000 veterans with funding, affording them to travel to places such as France, Holland, Italy, Greece, Malta, India, America, the Far East and North Africa.
The scheme was extended by 12 months to allow more veterans to participate, with closing date for applications now being 31^stJanuary 2012.

Time is fast running out and Ted Cachart desperately wants to spread the word and help as many people as possible access the funds before it is too late.

Having been through the successful application process himself, Ted is offering to help others do likewise. Based on his personal experience, he is offering general advice and free help with the associated form filling.

Ted Cachart knows only too well the bravery shown by the men and women who saw active service during World War II. He experienced the terrors himself, from the exceptionally young age of 15 (he 'embellished' his age in order to enlist), and is now appealing to everyone to spread the word that the 'Heroes Return 2' programme is ending in January 2012. It is hoped that many more people can benefit from this opportunity to travel and pay their final and fitting respects, revisit old battlefields and/or visit the sites where their loved ones fought.

Online Money Making and my Cyberdosh Challenge

Amazingly, it seems that many people who follow any form of frugal living or money saving lifestyle have much less interest in money making. I find that quite surprising, although I'm not too sure why, me being one of the 'penny saved is a penny earned' brigade.

Self employment has, for a long time, been the choice of many, but the costs of running a business are escalating, even when that business is run from home. It's only natural that we should want to reduce our overheads accordingly, in a bid to stay ahead of any crippling interest charges that may be affecting us, despite the historic low of actual interest rates. Combine this with an ever-increasing population of money savers, and it looks like selling anything is becoming increasingly difficult. Moneymaking opportuities abound for anyone offering a cheap alternative to healthy eating and a spectacular savings device that can half your utilities bills overnight. That combination would be a dead cert, even in my frugal book!

Hmm... I recall doing some research into the costs of borrowing, but I don't remember actually, 'looking for credit', but that's neither here nor there. The fact is, companies like First Standard ("loans for any purpose no matter what your credit status") will continue to advertise, they will target anyone who takes the time to read what they have to say. And that's where you need to keep up with your frugal fight.

Credit can be good, but only if you know for sure that it will return a longterm benefit. (Business is slightly different. As a frugal entrepreneur, you might choose to risk someone else's money with the aim being to generate profits.) But things have a habit of changing direction at the drop of a hat, so don't be fooled.

Try some good, old-fashioned number-crunching to assess your own financial state of affairs, make cuts wherever possible and try not to lose sight of the longterm. Keep all your options open with regards to future money-making opportunities, even if it is nothing more than a sudden wardrobe clear-out, in the hope of raising enough to clear an unexpected bill.

You don't need to be self-employed to begin selling online but, for many, it is a journey of discovery that results in a small business. You might suddenly realise that liquidating surplus personal items could, indeed, develop into a moneymaking enterprise, selling any manner of goods or services.

I still have nothing of commercial value to sell. However, once again, I am going to pursue the eBid option (free alternative to eBay) to declutter before the year ends. My original Seller+ package has long, since, paid for itself, so I have stores ready and waiting to be stocked for future moneymaking schemes and challenges, which brings me to the whole point of this post...

I'm taking it one step at a time and have challenged myself to raise £108 by selling items that I no longer need or want. It isn't a great deal of money, some may say it's an odd number, but this amount will cover the cost of the half tonne of coal that's due to be delivered to see us through to the end of the year. It's as good a place to start as any for a budding, frugal entrepreneur.

Money-making or money-saving online; either way, money matters.

The Cyberdosh Challenge on eBid

Preparing to launch the new Cyberdosh Challenge has been fun, all things considered!

I'm incorporating eBid for 2012 and want to invite all serious eBid sellers to take part. (Search for 'cyberdosh' in the eBid forums for past examples if you missed them - the good, the bad and the ugly.)

1) I've set up this brand new Cyberdosh blog plus corresponding forum, which I can use to feature top performers and help spread the word about how easy it is to start trading and earning an income from home.

2) On Twitter (follow Frugaldom here), I have set up a list for following eBidders. If you use Twitter to promote your eBid sales, I need your usernames to enable me to follow you and link them to the list. (Only those who follow back will be listed, I'm afraid, as this is proving to be very time consuming.)

3) I already have a free daily online 'newspaper', which got some good responses to my latest eBid feature, despite a slight hiccup midway through promoting it. I am now putting together a second FREE 'newspaper', specifically for this challenge. If you're in my eBid list on Twitter and you blog about your sales, offers and adventures with eBid, you could be featured.

4) Promoting next year's sales challenges will include a combination of social media, forums, blogs and articles, plus utilising the best of whatever free marketing, advertising and promotional tools we can access.

5) Anyone any ideas as to why I haven't been receiving my eBid monthly newsletters? Are these online and available for linking to blogs and forums yet?

I have been testing out a few ideas over the past months and keeping in contact with some fellow eBidders about this (you know who you all are), but a challenge isn't a challenge without challengers.

So... who is up for another BIG challenge? Can we make 2012 the year of huge successes?

As always, I tend to start these challenges the run up to Christmas, so we'll call from now to then a trial run to see if we get sufficient interest to warrant continuing next year. Going purely on previous results, I'm sure that won't be a problem. (For those of you who know me, you'll know there are always a few surprises in store along the way.)

A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned

Cyberdosh is about all the moneysaving ways I can think of that might help you make the decision to start earning an income from home. By harnessing the great powers of the Internet and World Wide Web, setting up your own home-based business could be more affordable than you think.

There are no fancy letters after my name, I'm neither a business guru, nor a specialist in any particular field, there's no fantastic success story (to date), nor are there any scanned copies of bulging bank account statements. All I have is an unquenchable thirst to succeed in earning enough money to support Frugaldom and the wish to help others realise their own earning potential.

This blog is a culmination of years of experience in working with like-minded others, supporting their efforts at garnering success and, more often than not, witnessing their downfalls. Oh yes, I have seen far more failures than successes over the past twenty-five years, but those are the sources of my experience and I have learned something new from every one of them. To all those people involved, I thank you for having the guts to have tried, failed, got back up and tried again and again and again!

In the beginning, if you are reading this, then let us assume you already have a computer and access to the Internet. Now, let's get our heads together and compare notes on exactly what, if anything, is available for frugal entrepreneurs. Right! I forgot there were no heads here yet... but never let it be said that it put me off getting started.

Do you have a need to succeed?

Generating an income from a homebased office (or corner of a room) is probably the most cost-effective, frugal and rewarding of jobs I can think of, but we need to remember that it is a job and that our time is important if we want to succeed. Time management is a skill best practiced from the start, especially if you are juggling building your frugal business empire with running a busy household and/or looking after a family.

Many would say that time is money, but I'm not one of these people.

My time is NOT money, my time is my own to spend as I please. (This is a problem.)

It pleases me to write, therefore I write.

Writing does not pay all of the bills, all of the time. (This is another problem.)

I am almost certain that any serious entrepreneur will confirm the fact that pursuing an enjoyable hobby is not the way to go when you need to earn money now! A steady stream of revenue is essential, so never be scared to chase away anything that interferes with your work schedule, even if it's a sponging, out of work, alcoholic friend or relative! Anything that drains your existing resources needs to be stemmed as soon as possible. (If you are looking for ways of saving money or beating debt, check out the Frugaldom forums and consider following the Frugal Blog.)

This particular Cyberdosh challenge is about combining current skills, hobbies and enjoyable passtimes to create a sound foundation on which to build a small, profitable business. The big difference is that, as frugal entrepreneaurs, we have no start-up funding, no initial cash injection from interest-grabbing financial institutions (thankfully) and no regular source of income to cover the costs of getting up to speed in running a home-based business. These factors are what can put many people off before they even begin. Am I right? Fear of success is another well-known factor, but I'll leave that one for another day.

Business planning is great, mainly because it is free. All you need is a simple spreadsheet that will calculate your overall costs, deduct your regular out-goings, add income from sales and provide you with an easy to understand document at the end of it all. It should also be excellent for highlighting the point at which you can expect to break even. Number-crunching is good, it exercises your brain and instills an element of urgency to tweak your figures in the right direction. It can also help with weight loss as, more often than not, you'll end up pacing the floor trying to make your business plan work. If you haven't mastered spreadsheets, don't worry, paper and a pen will do. But spreadsheets, in my novice opinion, are genuinely fun to use!

All going well, your figures will stack up to represent a realistic business opportunity. If they don't, you need to take a closer look at your numbers and resolve any issues regarding shortfall. Basically, ensure you have included everything that is needed, strip away anything that isn't needed, and focus on potential profit margins.

A few things to think about before beginning:

Will anyone pay you to do what you plan on doing?
Have you the time, energy and inclination to pursue your business (or personal) goals?
How much research have you done into your chosen field of business?
What costs are involved in the set-up?
Will the price you charge cover all your costs?
Do you enjoy a challenge?
Are you prepared to sit down and consider all your options?
Where do you start when formulating your business plan?

Preparing your business plan need not be a tenuous exercise, nor do you need to spend a fortune on expensive software. Here in Frugaldom, I chose to download a free office suite from http://www.openoffice.org/

This great free software allows you to create all of the following:

Text documents
Spreadsheets
Presentations
Drawings
Database
HTML documents
Business Cards
Labels
Forms

What I like most about Open Office, aside from the fact that it is free, is that your documents can all be saved into a variety of formats, allowing you to send them out and/or make them accessible to all. The straightforward spreadsheet programme has all the functionality you need to create and maintain a business plan and is also ideal for keeping tabs on accounts.

Please note that not every successful entrepreneur produces a business plan at the start; many fly by the seat of their pants and follow their instincts, for fear of missing a fantastic opportunity to corner a specific market.

Before I go, I must admit to one small faux pas, as far as moneysaving and frugal business planning go. This weekend started really badly, sending me into a tearful and furious, demon-like rage, not normally witnessed. (A full explanation of this can be found in the eBid forums.)

As a result of this major insult, I, NYK Media, a long-standing ambassador of Frugaldom, do solemnly swear that, without realising it, I ended up spending £5.99 that I had absolutely no intentions of spending! In all honesty, I'm stunned by my own actions! I'll mark it down to experience and write it off in the name of research! But I do recommend you read what instigated this, just in case anything similar ever happens to you.

Hopefully, it will turn out to be nothing more than a storm in a teacup.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

Initially, the Cyberdosh site was set up as an online game, combining free to enter, cash prize competitions with sponsor advertising. The initial experiment met with some success, more so because it was, inadvertently, mentioned on the FT.com website. The event caused great hilarity in the office at the time, as prospective investors were emailing to ask when there would be a share issue!

This was never going to happen, as we were merely promoting a dozen or so local businesses by offering a £100 prize fund by way of an online treasure hunt. Most of the represented businesses were homebased. I intend to recreate this simplistic marketing 'toy-ploy' soon, in a bid to compare results with those from a decade ago.

Following on from the game, we then took Cyberdosh to eBid, the UK based alternative to the globally famous eBay. It was an ideal platform, offering free membership and a secure platform on which to build a small business. Most people automatically assumed that eBid was the poor relative of the better known online auctions, but there's so much more to the site than first meets the eye, especially when you start considering the huge potential it offers for serious frugal entrepreneurs harnessing free advertising, marketig and promotional opportunities. Of course, it is still an auction-based selling platform, so jumping in with both feet at a whopping great cost of less than £50 for a lifetime membership was a no brainer for someone like me.

Forums, blogs and social media were still a long way from where they now are, but in the year 2000, I dipped my toes into the public forum foray, eventually running Cyberdosh challenges on a monthly basis. We succeeded in proving that sales increased accordingly with any increase in advertising, marketing and promotion, even when no money was spent. Not exactly rocket science, you may think, but for many newcomers to online cash generation, it convinced them to take the plunge and start a small business. From late 2007, part of the challenge was taken to Martin Lewis' Moneysavingexpert forums, where it still continues, albeit in a slightly different format to what was originally intended. Nowt as strange as folks, as they say, changes were brought about owing to circumstances beyond my control.

A DECADE LATER

Much has happened over the past decade. For homebased, working parents, family commitments often took over, more often than not at the expense of starting up or succeeding in business. Nowadays, opportunities abound for everyone and anyone with a little bit of entrepreneurial spirit and it is my belief that this is still only the tip of the iceberg.

Cash, or more specifically credit, isn't as readily available, so budgets are being squeezed and stretched to breaking point. But times continue to change. I'm not rich, but NYK Media is still here. I was able to do enough to suvive this far, but what of the future?

How can any small business expect to survive, let alone generate a healthy profit, when there are so many restrictions? What makes the difference between success or failure? What are the incentives for bringing great ideas, services and products to market if the essential investment capital is unavailable? In order to get started and to survive during any economic slump we need to think outside the box - we need to be prepared to jump at every opportunity for extra exposure and ensure that every minute spent in doing so is geared towards benefitting your longterm business plan.

ABOUT THE CHALLENGE

For the purposes of the 2012 challenge, we are looking for a few enterprising individuals to join us in a bid to create, maintain and/or grow a small business of their own. It might be something you have already started or it might even be a brand new business idea. The main point is that it fits in with the concept of the 'frugal entrepreneur'..

In my next blog post, I will explain what I understand to be the meaning of a 'frugaleur'.

The Cyberdosh Challenge is completely FREE. Anyone is welcome to join at any time and no business is too small. If you choose not to take part, you are more than welcome to observe from the sidelines or throw in your tuppence worth if you see anyone making any glaring mistakes or taking any expensive wrong turns.
